Fantasy Script

Nerdy guys aren’t guaranteed to get laid by the hot chick as long as we work hard. There isn’t a team of writers or a studio audience pulling for us to triumph by getting the girl. (Read the sequel: Who Died and Made You Khaleesi? )

Arthur Chu

I was going to write about The Big Bang Theory —why, as a nerdy viewer, I sometimes like it and sometimes have a problem with it, why I think there’s a backlash against it. Then some maniac shot up a sorority house in Santa Barbara and posted a manifesto proclaiming he did it for revenge against women for denying him sex. And the weekend just generally went to hell.

So now my plans have changed. With apologies to Big Bang Theory fans , this is all I want to say about The Big Bang Theory: When the pilot aired, it was 2007 and “nerd culture” and “geek chic” were on everyone’s lips, and yet still the basic premise of “the sitcom for nerds” was, once again, awkward but lovable nerd has huge unreciprocated crush on hot non-nerdy popular girl (and also has an annoying roommate).

This annoys me. This is a problem.

Because, let’s be honest, this device is old. We have seen it over and over again. Steve Urkel. Screech. Skippy on Family Ties. Niles on Frasier.

We (male) nerds grow up force-fed this script. Lusting after women “out of our league” was what we did. And those unattainable hot girls would always inevitably reject us because they didn’t understand our intellectual interest in science fiction and comic books and would instead date asshole jocks. This was inevitable, and our only hope was to be unyieldingly persistent until we “earned” a chance with these women by “being there” for them until they saw the error of their ways. (The thought of just looking for women who shared our interests was a foreign one, since it took a while for the media to decide female geeks existed. The Big Bang Theory didn’t add Amy and Bernadette to its main cast until Season 4, in 2010.)

This is, to put it mildly, a problematic attitude to grow up with. Fixating on a woman from afar and then refusing to give up when she acts like she’s not interested is, generally, something that ends badly for everyone involved. But it’s a narrative that nerds and nerd media kept repeating.

I’m not breaking new ground by saying this. It’s been said very well and and again.

And I’m not condemning guys who get frustrated, or who have unrequited crushes. And I’m not condemning any of these shows or movies.

We use the “minimal” scaling model ( Figure 1b ) when the reference state refers to a low, precautionary level, as found in marine management of small pelagic fish [29] : (3) When scaling the indicator for the minimal model, we assume that a deteriorated state for the indicator corresponds to a decrease below the reference level, and that any value above this reference level corresponds to an optimal situation.

We use the “maximal” scaling model ( Figure 1c ) when the reference state refers to a maximal value above which detrimental effects on ecosystems are observed, such as a maximal limit for the density of a proliferating species, or community, of phytoplankton or jelly-fish: (4) Once the set of scaled indicators is calculated, it can be averaged across any of its axes i , j , k , or t , or any combination of axes. For example, an averaged value for all indicators, all spatial units, and all major ecosystems over time can be expressed as: (5) where is a documented value for the indicator i in ecosystem j in spatial unit k and date t , and otherwise. corresponds to a set of n simulated values, at date t . The final NI value can be expressed as the median of the simulated values, together with 95% confidence intervals around the median expressed as 2.5% and 97.5% quantiles. The set of simulated NI values allows for statistical testing by calculating p -values; for example, when comparing the index for two dates t 1 and t 2 , .

In previous implementations, no particular weights were applied to any of the i , j , or k axes. All calculations were made under a “complete equivalence” assumption, i.e., no locality, no major ecosystem, and no indicator was considered more important than another. This assumption is clearly open to criticism. If all components of biodiversity were equally studied, all indicators could be documented at all dates and spatial locations and, if all spatial locations were equally representative, there would be no need for weights. However, no matter how much care is taken when building the indicator set, discrepancies are likely to occur because not all taxa, functional groups, or geographical areas can be studied to the same degree [14] , [20] , [30] . Taxa such as fish, birds, and mammals are better documented than others, either because they attract more public interest or because study models are readily accessible. These potential discrepancies between spatial units or indicator representativeness meant it was necessary to introduce weights [14] . Weights can be defined across the indicator axis i , the major ecosystem axis j , and the spatial unit axis k . Introducing any set of weights W ijkt within the NI formula is straightforward: (6) where the condition for any date t , and if indicator i has not been documented for the major ecosystem j in spatial unit k on date t .

Scottish director Michael Caton-Jones, who cast a 15-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio in 1993’s This Boy’s Life, put Wright in his 2015 film Urban Hymn , playing an angry young woman with a gift for song. That performance put Wright on the radar for Spielberg and Marvel—but first, she took a turn on the West End in Eclipsed, a play about Liberian rebel soldiers written by none other than her future Black Panther co-star Danai Gurira. When the play moved to Broadway, Wright’s role was played by yet another future Wakandan, Lupita Nyong’o.

Wright calls this a “triangular, crazy connection,” but it also says something about the often limited opportunities for actresses of color unwilling to settle for stereotypical roles. Black Panther —with its myriad of multifaceted characters—could go a long way toward burying those stereotypes once and for all. “Everybody else has three-dimensional characters,” Wright points out. “Leonardo DiCaprio’s characters are all well-rounded and sort of ultra-cool, you know?”

And like her Black Panther co-star Michael B. Jordan, who is producing and starring in an upcoming adaptation of Fahrenheit 451, Wright knows she needs to take things into her own hands. “I have to also get into producing if I want to see these stories being made. . . . Let’s venture out and do projects with people of different ethnicities. Not just black, but also Asian actors and Asian superhero films. Just an equality across the board.”

Michael B. Jordan,

Wright say she’s already eager to prove she can do even more; she name checks Big Little Lies as the kind of series she’d do to surprise people once again. But for now, she’s created Shuri, who is already well on her way to being some other actor’s Akeelah (without the bee). After a packed advance screening of Black Panther in Los Angeles last week, two young boys went bounding ahead of the crowd leaping for joy and punching the warm night air. They weren’t pretending to be Black Panther, or even another Wakandan warrior. They were pretending to be Shuri.
